As he ends mission in Salone: FAO Rep dedicates time served to female farmers

 

After serving as the Country Representative for the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Sierra Leone for over five years, Gabriel Rugalema has finally ended his mission in the country and is set to move on to another assignment.
In an interview with Awoko, the FAO Representative spoke about his experience and successes during his tenure in Sierra Leone.

WAAPP undertakes phase out implementation support mission

 

As the first phase of the final country implementation programme of the West Africa Productivity Programme (WAAPP) comes to an end, a team from the organisation together has undertaken a visit to their implementing partners.

The team also comprises the Word Bank Implementation Support Mission (ISM) undertaken by the World Bank, Government of Sierra Leone and key implementing partners of the project to appraise milestones achieved as against set benchmarks in the previous ISM.

Sierra Leone's first Ebola-hit community reconsiders its traditions

Violently coughing up blood, the woman was close to collapse when brought to Kailahun hospital in eastern Sierra Leone from her village close to the Guinean border.

For nursing staff, the spectre of the killer Ebola virus had returned.

"My staff went into PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)," said Samuel Massaquoi, medical superintendent of the hospital. "People said that if she came from near Guinea she had Ebola."

President Koroma Launches National Employment Policy and Strategy and Implementation Plan for Sierra Leone

 

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, Monday 2 May, 2016// -- President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma has launched the National Employment Policy and Strategy and Implementation Plan for 2015-2018 at the Miatta Conference Hall, Brookfields in Freetown. The National Employment Policy is a policy response towards addressing and improving labor relations and conditions of service of workers in Sierra Leone.

 

During a grand ceremony to commemorate International Labour Day, the president said the launch of the new employment policy has clearly shown his government’s commitment and effectiveness in addressing labour issues in the country. He stated that government is part of labour congress and that is why programmes and policies under his administration are always directed towards the protection of the ordinary man, adding that government has come reasonably far to formalizing the informal sector.

AWC delivers 780 babies between January and April

The world yesterday commemorated the International Midwifery Day. To mark this day on the theme ‘Women and Babies’, Aberdeen Women Center (AWC) took part in the celebration with pregnant women and outreach sensitisation in the community.
Olivia Hill, Clinical Director of AWC, disclosed to Awoko that the Center that the centre was to deliver a total 780 babies between January and April 2016 under EmONC. Of these, 655 were normal deliveries and 125 were operative deliveries in the Caesarean Section and this is rated at 19%”.
