The Battle On Ebola Might Be Over, But For Survivors The War Continues
Primary tabs
On March 29 it seemed like the battle on Ebola was over when the WHO declared an end to the epidemic. But with the focus of the international media gone, the last cases of Ebola buried, hundreds of survivors still continue the fight - this time to keep their fading vision. The world now has an unprecedented number of Ebola survivors, some 17,000 individuals who survived the initial ravages of this terrifying virus now live on, many of them in a state of abject poverty. The worst hit countries were also the poorest. These economically challenged countries like Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone must now bear the burgeoning cost of caring for survivors, many of whom continue to develop new symptoms every day. According to the World Bank these countries lost USD 1.6 billion in 2015 alone. What makes the current situation so worrisome is the poverty of these nations and the presence of live Ebola virus in the body fluids of survivors.
