Measles outbreak highlights importance of immunisation

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says the ongoing measles outbreak highlights the importance of being immunised.

The Waikato region is experiencing a significant measles outbreak, and visitors to and from Waikato have led to further measles cases in the Nelson Marlborough, Northland and MidCentral DHB areas.

“Measles is a highly infectious and potentially serious disease. Around 30 per cent of people with measles will develop complications, and 1 in 10 may require hospital treatment,” says Dr Coleman.

“It can affect both children and adults. Low immunisation levels among certain age groups mean outbreaks can spread.

Measles

Key facts

  • Measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available.
  • In 2014, there were 114 900 measles deaths globally – about 314 deaths every day or 13 deaths every hour.
  • Measles vaccination resulted in a 79% drop in measles deaths between 2000 and 2014 worldwide.
  • In 2014, about 85% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday through routine health services – up from 73% in 2000.
  • During 2000-2014, measles vaccination prevented an estimated 17.1 million deaths making measles vaccine one of the best buys in public health.

Measles is a highly contagious, serious disease caused by a virus. In 1980, before widespread vaccination, measles caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year.

The disease remains one of the leading causes of death among young children globally, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine. Approximately 114 900 people died from measles in 2014 – mostly children under the age of 5.

Half of Measles Patients Unvaccinated, Most Willingly

Half of those who contracted measles over the past 15 years were unvaccinated, and in most of those cases the patient (or their legal guardian) refused the vaccination, reports a new study published online earlier this week by the “Journal of the American Medical Association.”

Vaccination aversion has fueled measles and whooping cough outbreaks, study finds

A comprehensive new study of measles and pertussis outbreaks in the United States suggests that adults’ reluctance or refusal to vaccinate themselves and their children has played a key role in the resurgence of diseases that had been largely eradicated in this country.

In an analysis published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Assn., epidemiologists scoured reports of measles and pertussis outbreaks to glean what role vaccination refusal and hesitance played. They also considered the effect of waning immunity among those who were vaccinated.

How Digital Health is Opening Up Communication Between Doctors & Patients

Nothing is more important between a doctor and a patient than communication. The more you communicate, the healthier people get and the more knowledgeable doctors become. Without open lines of communication, important details can be missed, patients might put off appointments for too long and trust can’t be built.

Cloud-based patient relationship management (PRM) systems are one of the latest ways for offices and clinics to keep the lines of communication open. This new digital health technology is providing avenues for two-way communication that makes discussions between doctors and patients easier to initiate, monitor and document.

Sierra Leone targets 1.5m children in measles campaign

The Second round of vaccination against measles in Sierra Leone has been scheduled to commence on Thursday, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation said today. Over 1.5 million children are being targeted during the five-day campaign that will see health volunteers move door-to-door to vaccinate children against the preventable viral disease that reared its ugly head at the height of the Ebola epidemic.

Children who missed out on other routine vaccinations will also be given those doses.
