The five man assessment mission to the eastern district of Kailahun was as a result of the re-emergence of the ebola disease in Liberia which borders with Sierra Leone, both on the south and east.
On arrival in Kailahun which could be described as one of the high risk districts, in the event of an epidemic, Dr Brima Kargbo noted that for the past year a single case has not been reported, and was very impressed over the level of preparedness and mechanisms put in place at border crossing points and the on-going community sensitization.
The District Health Management Team in Kailahun, team leader, District Medical Officer, Dr James Squire assured the visiting team of continued commitment to ensure that all key pillars, including surveillance, case management, social mobilisation and infection prevention control measures are intensified in all health facilities and border crossing points with proper screening and isolation established.
Dr Squire disclosed that infection prevention control measures are being effectively implemented with rapid diagnostic tests supported by US Centre for Disease Control and reassured the Chief Medical Officer that the ebola epidemic will not strive in a system that is working.
Updates on death alert, movement of people from the two countries mostly women on business transactions from Sierra Leone to Liberia, active case search and movement are all in progress with track record of movement of people in and out.
The five man mission and the CDC team commended the Kailahun DHMT for the good work, disclosing that there is no need for alarm or fear as there are no high risks cases, only few cases are mild fever and malaria.
