The Chairman of Mental Health Coalition- Sierra Leone, Walter Carew on Wednesday revealed to journalists that mental health illness has been neglected in the health system.
The Chairman made this pronouncement during a one day workshop organised by his coalition for journalists to raise awareness on mental health at their Bass Street office, off King Harman Road in Freetown.
The purpose of the workshop was to raise media awareness on mental health and also change the perception of people regarding how mental illness is being portrayed and reported.
According to Walter Carew, “mental health has been neglected in the health system in terms of investment and infrastructure,” he said.
He maintained that they are currently engaged in a campaign to improve and promote mental health. He noted that they need every sector to be involved and the media is a key institution that can raise awareness about the issue of mental health and also sensitise the public about it.
