Sexual transmission involved in tail end of Ebola epidemic

Some of the final cases of Ebola in Sierra Leone were transmitted via unconventional routes, such as semen and breastmilk, according to the largest analysis to date of the tail-end of the epidemic.


An international team of researchers has produced a detailed picture of the latter stages of the outbreak in Sierra Leone, using real-time sequencing of Ebola virus genomes carried out in a temporary laboratory in the country.

Jolak’s Manufacturing Company invests $1.2m in oil & soap production in Wellington

Jolak’s Manufacturing Company a joint venture has invested US$1.2m in the processing of vegetable oil ‘MAMA PADI’ and production of laundry soap at Wellington Industrial Estate in Freetown. The General Manager of the company Mukish Patel disclosed this during a public disclosure session of the company’s Environmental Social Health Impact Assessment at Mas Complex Calaba Town.

The company is constructing and installing equipment in its facility in Wellington, the General Manager said.  Expatriates and construction engineers doing the work are engaged in knowledge transfer to local staff in accordance with the local content policy Mr. Mukish Patel emphasized.

Palm oil and soap will be the main products of Jolak and the company will ensure they are of high quality, he said. Jobs will also be provided; he assured the youths in the community.

MRC to rebrand and invest in tourism Industry

 

As a way to boost the country’s economy and to rebrand the tourism industry, the Monuments and Relics Commission (MRC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has on Thursday revealed to journalists about the on-going project for the enclosure and renovations of some historical sites.

Highlighting some of the benefits in rebranding the tourism section, the Deputy Minister of Cultural Affairs, Honourable Dixon Bella Fofanah noted the hard work of the commission in using the available fund appropriately adding that the desire to create the said revenue needs government’s full support.

Pregnant girls should not be forgotten -Save the Children CEO

 

Helle Thorning- Schmidt former Denmark Prime Minister now Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Save the Children during his two days visit in the country has said that one of the messages for the government is not to forget the girls that suffered through ebola.

Addressing journalists on Thursday at the Save the Children’s office, about the visit they had with the president and other donor partners the CEO disclosed that they had three issues, which they came with and discussed. “Our main messages are that firstly, we are in line with the governments in their ebola recovery plan as it is good to set this kind of plan for the country.  We also asked that the girls that suffered through ebola should not be forgotten and the group of children we are thinking of are those pregnant girls”.
