Jolak’s Manufacturing Company a joint venture has invested US$1.2m in the processing of vegetable oil ‘MAMA PADI’ and production of laundry soap at Wellington Industrial Estate in Freetown. The General Manager of the company Mukish Patel disclosed this during a public disclosure session of the company’s Environmental Social Health Impact Assessment at Mas Complex Calaba Town.

The company is constructing and installing equipment in its facility in Wellington, the General Manager said. Expatriates and construction engineers doing the work are engaged in knowledge transfer to local staff in accordance with the local content policy Mr. Mukish Patel emphasized.

Palm oil and soap will be the main products of Jolak and the company will ensure they are of high quality, he said. Jobs will also be provided; he assured the youths in the community.

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, Monday 2 May, 2016// -- President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma has launched the National Employment Policy and Strategy and Implementation Plan for 2015-2018 at the Miatta Conference Hall, Brookfields in Freetown. The National Employment Policy is a policy response towards addressing and improving labor relations and conditions of service of workers in Sierra Leone.

During a grand ceremony to commemorate International Labour Day, the president said the launch of the new employment policy has clearly shown his government’s commitment and effectiveness in addressing labour issues in the country. He stated that government is part of labour congress and that is why programmes and policies under his administration are always directed towards the protection of the ordinary man, adding that government has come reasonably far to formalizing the informal sector.

Today marks the 42nd day that Sierra Leone has had no new cases of Ebola. That potentially signals the end of the epidemic in that country.

I spent almost three months in Sierra Leone over the last year, both as a clinician in Ebola treatment units and as an infection control educator.

Ebola Stigma Keeps Many From Work in Liberia

DAKAR and MONROVIA --Burial teams undertook some of the most hazardous work in Liberia’s fight against Ebola. With the West African nation now getting relief from the virus, these men and women say societal stigma is keeping them from getting jobs....

Being unemployed is no small thing in Liberia, which was already recovering from nearly two decades of ruinous civil war before Ebola broke out in 2014.

About two-thirds of Liberians live in poverty, according to the World Bank. Sonny Fayon was unemployed when the outbreak started, he found work on a burial team, but now is out of a job again. Even though he never got sick, no one will hire him, he said.

“We’re not very vulnerable to the Ebola business. We’re well-protected, we wore protective clothing to do the job,” Fayon stated. “So they should accept us. I think we were very careful in doing the work.”
