The Ascension Town Community Youth Organisation has in an interview with Awoko last Thursday, called on the government to relocate the current Burmeh Dump site.
While he was explaining about the effects of the site to them as a people, the Chairman of the organisation, Joseph Tommy Logan said that the mix of smoke and stench that emits from the site especially during the dry season is causing them health hazards and thus reducing their life span. He added that even the smell and smoke from drugs burnt on the site by the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone it also affecting their health seriously.
The chairman said the community is growing with people moving in the dump site. He pointed out that in this day and age; having a dump site in the middle of human settlement is “uncalled for and unhealthy”.
He suggested that if government cannot afford relocating the site with immediate effect, it should consider building a high fence around the site in order to keep the site safe and avoid the spilling of waste around.
Speaking on other challenges they are facing, he said that there is poor water facility in the community as they have only one tap serving the entire community. He said that though the tap runs from 6:00am to 6:00pm, it is still a challenge due to the increased population in the community.
In addition to that he said there is no community centre in the community, noting that they are usually constrained when they want hold community meetings and other social activities.
