More than 20 African countries have joined together in an international mission to plant a massive wall of trees running across the continent – and after a little over a decade of work, it has reaped great success.

The tree-planting project, which has been dubbed The Great Green Wall of Africa, stretches across roughly 6,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) of terrain at the southern edge of the Sahara desert, a region known as the Sahel.

The region was once a lush oasis of greenery and foliage back in the 1970s, but the combined forces of population growth, unsustainable land management, and climate change turned the area into a barren and degraded swath of land . . .

Parliament Approves $ 40 Million Agreements To Strengthen Agriculture

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has on Tuesday 24th May 2016, after a protracted debate, unanimously approved two agreements for the expansion and strengthening of the agricultural sector through commercialization.

 

The two agreements that were approved by Parliament were; financing agreement (smallholder commercialization and agri-business development project) between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the International Development Association, dated 14th March, 2016, credit number 5767-SL and Project agreement (smallholder commercialization and agri-business development project) between the International Development Association and Apex Bank Limited, dated 14th March, 2016, credit number 5767-SL

WAAPP SaLone attains highest World Bank rating

The West Africa Agriculture Productivity Programme (WAAPP) Sierra Leone has been rated “satisfactory” by the World Bank at a regional wrap up summit in Ghana.
This is the highest rating in the score sheet of the World Bank with regards the implementation of WAAPP at the country level. The rating is pegged at the achievement of key deliverables set by the Bank, the project and its partners in the previous country support mission which is held half yearly.

FAO hands over $45,000 equipment to farmers for early warning

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) with support from Irish Aid over the weekend handed over computer and other accessories worth about $45,000 to farmers for early warning on food and nutrition security.

Committee on WAPP discusses Environmental Impact

Members of the national committee for the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP) Project to be implemented by TRANSCO Energy discussed the state of implementation of the project.
Held at its Freetown, Headquarter along Sir Samuel Lewis road, members of the national monitoring committee met to discuss major recommendations from the last session held in December, regarding the WAPP project.

According to the TRANSCO CLSG, Environmental Coordinator, Pakidame Kolani, TRANSCO together with the national monitoring committee will follow all protocols on environmental impact before, during and after the completion of the four Mano River Countries, interconnectivity energy transmission network.

As he ends mission in Salone: FAO Rep dedicates time served to female farmers

 

After serving as the Country Representative for the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Sierra Leone for over five years, Gabriel Rugalema has finally ended his mission in the country and is set to move on to another assignment.
In an interview with Awoko, the FAO Representative spoke about his experience and successes during his tenure in Sierra Leone.

WAAPP undertakes phase out implementation support mission

 

As the first phase of the final country implementation programme of the West Africa Productivity Programme (WAAPP) comes to an end, a team from the organisation together has undertaken a visit to their implementing partners.

The team also comprises the Word Bank Implementation Support Mission (ISM) undertaken by the World Bank, Government of Sierra Leone and key implementing partners of the project to appraise milestones achieved as against set benchmarks in the previous ISM.
